Overview

In a world of growing, changing and ever more complex cities, the people who shape and build them will need to understand the challenges and opportunities these new conditions create. The innovative Urban Workshop series will offer urban professionals – architects, planners, designers, engineers, administrators – as well as students, educators and scholars and others with an avid interest in global cities, intensive and focused explorations of some of the most dynamic cities in the world.

The first Urban Workshop will convene in Delhi, India from January 3 to 21, 2011. It will concentrate on current conditions and issues in the context of this once ancient and legendary city that later evolved into Mughal and imperial capitals, and since Indian independence, has become the vibrant center of an increasingly influential nation. Participants will directly experience Delhi’s complex heritage, pulsating life and looming challenges. The second Delhi Workshop will be held in October 2011.

The themes to be examined in the Delhi Workshop will include planning and development, infrastructure, social and economic change, environmental conditions and migration and metropolitan growth. This will be done through lectures and discussions, field trips to historic and contemporary sites and visits to key organizations. There will also be guided small-group projects in various parts of Delhi plus weekend visits to Chandigarh and Agra/Fatephur Sikri/Jaipur. The Workshop will be led by senior faculty from leading universities in Delhi as well as experienced practitioners, with the participation of staff members from public and private agencies.

The Workshop will offer ample time to see Delhi’s fabled attractions, enjoy cultural events and become familiar with the city. For those who have not been to India, the Workshop will provide an unsurpassed introduction to the country and its capital city, while those who have already been there will be able to deepen their understanding and knowledge of this extraordinary place and culture. Before and after the Workshop is an ideal season to visit most other parts of India.
